Towards a New Generation of Biopesticides: the Agrocode Method

Whiteflies, powdery mildew, aphid, botrytis and many other pests and diseases have a new arsenal of enemies. They are the biopesticides, allies of the farmer, that burst with force into the field. A few days ago, I was able to visit the factory that Kimitec Group owns, alongside the A-7 in the Amerian Poniente, on a guided tour to get to know the different laboratories that the R & D department has developed in this Almerian biotechnology company.

During the tour we visited different rooms, among them the production of probiotics, being noteworthy in mycorrhizae sterility. Félix García, CEO of the company, explained that there is an added value in the mycorrhizae of the Kimitec Group, precisely in how they caress and care for their protocols of sterility so that we can prevent hypothetical unexpected soil problems, specifically referring to the proliferation of pests.

Botanical Research

Then, later in the R & D laboratory, researcher Omar Santana made a detailed description of the hard work they do with their team concerned about biopesticides. Prior to the search of vegetable sources that arose from this study, they documented crops and their infestations with analysis and regulations from their country of origin.

From there the search begins for raw materials to make the perfect compound to combat the pests that were under examination. The panel of raw materials is very wide: ranging from seeds to barks, to roots and flowers. Their next step will be to remove all of the chemical compounds that could be used in the formula later on. For example, in the aromatic plants, an advantage of the extraction of essential oils is in their high effectiveness to act as a concentrate in very low condensations.

Screening

To understand the process better, I will give you an example: white fly in a crop «x» and in a country «y.» In the search for a biopesticide that meets these parameters, it is possible to have to sieve and

screen between 160 and 200 candidates. Hopefully, just a small number, ranging between 3 and 5, will reach the end of the screening and enter into the pre-formulation stage. Although everything said so far corresponds to the botanical part; I also wanted to title this post «Towards a New Generation of Biopesticides: the Agrocode Method» because Kimitec Group takes several more steps to fight against possible pest problems of the future. And here is where we enter the part about microbiology.

The Formulation Technology

The search for biopesticides is a long journey and has required Kimitec Group to change their pursuit multiple times to find other chemical compounds that come from fungi, bacteria, mites or insect; ones not only made of plants (the botanical sector). With those, we have other sources that will help induce defenses in agricultural crops. This whole process of formulation encompasses a broad concept of technology.

Nueva-generacion-pesticidas

«In Kimitec Group we are moving towards a new generation of biopesticides,» described Omar Santana, «a method in which we not only talk about botany but also about natural stabilization, fungi, the induction of defenses and technology of the formulation, among many other ideas.»

Trials

The following segment will be about the trials that are launching in the laboratory to analyze the activity of potential biopesticides: tests that will be repeated later in the field and finally in greenhouses.

If they obtain the expected results, they will develop the file and take it to registry.
