Conquering the stomach of the plant. Prebiotics arrive to agriculture

Under the ground, there is a battle. As in the aerial part of the plant the dispute between the good and bad ‘bugs’ leads us to talk about biological control; in the scene that we do not see below the ground, we find this confrontation between harmful and beneficial agents. It is another integrated fight, a control that we could call microbiological.

The Andalusian firm Kimitec Group is betting heavily on the use of agriculture prebiotics. This was explained to me a few days ago by Félix García -CEO of the company based out of the Almerían Poniente-, who highlighted this fact especially now, which with the arrival of the cold, the nutrition of the crop is vital to maintain production in the greenhouses. «In agriculture, we have introduced molecules that feed the beneficial microorganisms of the soil, aware that its use is not only restricted to the stomach of a human and animal but it also expands to the stomach of the plant.

As a result of this R&D, the farmer can feed the beneficial fungi or bacteria that promote microbial life activity, obtaining greater yield, greater flavor, and healthier fruits. It is a project that we have been researching for more than 2 years alongside Las Palmerillas and recently with Pablo Campra who has joined the search in the last few months,» García described to me.

These prebiotics from Kimitec Group serve as «food for the stomach of plants,» commercially called Batallón and Prebiota Max. They are tools that prevent decompensation of soils – due to the dominance of harmful microorganisms – resulting in the appearance of pathologies in the plants. To weaken the battle against probiotics, these two prebiotics have differentiated characteristics and effects.

«Batallón has a selective action, influencing more yield per square meter and favoring fruiting. While Prebiota Max – which we are introducing now – is more generic because it has a double beneficial effect, on a nutritional level and also in preventing pathogens from out-winning the beneficial microorganisms,» detailed the agronomist Luis Miguel Sánchez, member of the research project team of this company.

These microorganisms or good probiotics release different types of biostimulating molecules or beneficial nutrients for the development of the plant and its root system. With the use of prebiotics we are able to activate these microorganisms and therefore carry 100% of this molecular expression that is so beneficial for the crop. On the other hand, microorganisms secrete enzymes that solubilize blocked nutrients by making them available to the plant. For example, with the cold of December they get, colloquially speaking, «a shot for the plants» or in a less graphic way, «the plants are activated for winter».

A really interesting topic. As Félix García told me, «the directed prebiotics will mark the future of agriculture».

Natural cycle of feeding

It is nutrition based on the biology of the soil and, therefore, a natural feeding cycle. Batallón and Prebiota Max activate the reservoirs of minerals that are in the subsoil and that are not soaked up by the plants until the moment of their activation. The search for a microbiological balance. It feeds the good ‘bug’ that secretes and biostimulates the plant, improving its root and vegetative growth, its defense against pathogenic invaders, and its ability to prevent parasites, among many other positive effects regarding crops.
