A ponerse las pilas. No se puede estar haciendo siempre lo mismo, aunque quien lo haga sea muy bueno en lo suyo. Hay que buscar nuevo valor añadido porque los tiempos cambian, porque la competencia no cesa y porque la globalización hace que solo sobrevivan los que ofrecen ese plusvalor a su trabajo.
We have to get our act together. You can not be doing always the same thing, even though who does it is very good at what he/she does. En los Países Bajos las explotaciones de vacuno no solo venden leche de vaca fresca, sino también otros muchos subproductos que hacen que estas granjas sean sostenibles. Este modelo es el que tienen que seguir las empresas españolas de frutas y hortalizas en fresco para que su negocio no sea tan volátil y dependiente de la inestable oferta y demanda de los mercados europeos.

Esta semana he visitado, con otros trece periodistas europeos especializados en el sector agroalimentario, una granja lechera de vacuno, situada al norte de Bruselas y a unos 27 kilómetros al sur de Amberes. Sus propietarios, Raf y Anne De keersmaecker, nos explicaban que no solo venden leche de vaca fresca, sino que también han logrado comercializar leche de mantequilla y chocolate, mantequilla, yogur, queso y postres como tiramisú, pudin o mouse de chocolate. Durante el encuentro el portavoz de la Comisión de Agricultura, Roger Waite, presente en la visita, les preguntó si dependían o no para vivir de las subvenciones de la PAC. Contestaron Raf y Anne que no, que gracias al valor añadido de estos productos tenían una explotación rentable. Y añadían que no tenían la misma suerte los granjeros vecinos que solo producían leche de vaca fresca.

La enseñanza es bien sencilla. En Almería, Granada, Málaga, Murcia o cualquier zona del Levante español donde se cultive tomate hay que hacer también ketchup. O tomate en conserva o lo que sea, dependiendo de cada hortaliza. Si los agricultores individualmente no lo pueden hacer, quien sí tiene esa capacidad es su cooperativa o su OPFH. Ejemplos de productores que además transforman hay algunos, pero todavía son pocos. Hortofrutícola Costa de Almería ha comenzado a hacer pimientos asados y el Grupo Caparrós tiene un amplio abanico de productos de V gama y conservas. Que cunda el ejemplo.
